BILLINGS — A cold front is bringing a round of potentially strong thunderstorms to south central and southeast Montana and northern Wyoming Sunday evening, followed by a quieter and more seasonable stretch of weather through much of the upcoming week.
SUNDAY
A few storms have been strong to severe, capable of producing damaging wind gusts of 55 to 70 mph and hail larger than one inch. Brief heavy rainfall may also lead to localized ponding of water. Storm activity will shift east and diminish overnight.
MONDAY
A cooler and drier air mass settles into the region behind the cold front. High temperatures will generally reach the 80s across Billings, Red Lodge, Sheridan, Miles City, and surrounding areas. Northwest winds will become breezy at times, especially toward southeast Montana. Most locations stay dry with lower humidity levels and improved visibility.
TUESDAY
Pleasant late-summer weather continues with sunshine mixed with a few afternoon clouds. Temperatures remain near seasonal averages in the mid to upper 80s. Most of south central Montana and northern Wyoming remain dry, though an isolated afternoon shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out.
WEDNESDAY
A weak disturbance may bring a slight chance of scattered afternoon and evening showers or thunderstorms. Coverage appears limited, and many communities will stay dry. Temperatures continue to run near normal, ranging from the upper 80s to around 90.
THURSDAY
Warm and generally quiet conditions dominate across the region. A few isolated thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon, but most areas can expect plenty of dry time. Highs climb into the upper 80s and lower 90s.
FRIDAY
The warming trend continues with temperatures reaching the upper 80s to lower 90s across much of south central Montana and northern Wyoming. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms remain possible, but widespread rainfall is not expected.
SATURDAY
Late-summer warmth persists with highs near or slightly above 90 degrees in many lower-elevation locations. While a spotty afternoon thunderstorm cannot be ruled out, most communities should experience dry weather with periods of sunshine.
