Youth deer hunt underway in Montana

If you're a four-legged woodland creature in Montana, you might be saying "Oh deer!" right about now.

The annual youth deer hunt began on Thursday and continues on Friday.

The deer-only hunt gives children between the ages of 10 and 15 the opportunity to learn about hunting.

The two-day event is planned specifically during Montana's annual teachers convention, a two-day period when most public schools are closed.

This gives students the time to head out and hunt.

The two-day youth hunt is open to:

  • legally licensed 12-15 year olds who have completed hunter education and who are accompanied by a non-hunting adult at least 18 years of age
  • properly certified and legally licensed apprentice hunters 10-15 years of age who are accompanied by a non-hunting adult "mentor" at least 21 years of age

The general deer and elk season begins on October 26 and runs through December 1.
