A man shot by Missoula police Monday has died, officials said Tuesday.
Missoula Police Department officers responded to a report of suspicious drug-related activity in a lot at the intersection of North 2nd Street and A Street at approximately 4:40 p.m. Monday.
Montana Department of Justice spokesman John Barnes says a confrontation ensued when officers attempted to speak with Steven Gill, 35. Shots were fired and Gill was struck.
Gill died of his wounds after being taken to Saint Patrick Hospital. No officers were injured during the confrontation.
Barnes says that at the request of Missoula Police Chief Mike Brady, the Montana Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.
A case file will be sent to the Missoula County Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is complete, according to Barnes.
Missoula Police Department spokesman Sgt. Travis Welsh told MTN News that two officers have been placed on administrative leave as per department policy as the investigation continues.
No further information is being released at this time.
