With a torch of inspiration in their hands, Helena Capital High and Helena High students competed on Thursday for their annual crosstown weld-off.
Now in its eighth year, the event had four teams of four welding students each. The teams were tasked with creating sculptures out of donated scrap metal, with only four hours to do it.
This year’s theme was “Robots” and students were encouraged to have many moving parts in their creation.
The creations are judged on their welding technique and creativity in the design of their project.
Helena High Welding Instructor Cindy Galbavy said the weld-off is a fun way to showcase what the students are capable of, and a great opportunity for them to learn valuable job skills.
“They’re learning how to handle a team situation, and giving them the skills to communicate and produce,” said Galbavy. “They may get frustrated with each other, but they turn around and get it done within the four hours.”
Galbavy said it’s been a pleasure to see the students skills grow, and she is excited to see what they turn out this year.
The final designs will be revealed tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Helena High Shop, and the event is open to the public.
Galbavy also wanted to thank the sponsors who donated thousands of dollars worth of prizes for the students.
“We are blessed in this community that we have so much support,” said Galbavy. “We wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”
