BILLINGS — A 37-year-old Billings man was transported to the hospital with serious injuries after crashing his motorcycle near 6th Avenue North and Main Street at 3:17 a.m. Saturday, according to Billings Police Sgt. Bret Becker.
The rider was traveling southbound on Main Street and attempted to drive the right hand curve onto 6th Avenue North at a high rate of speed, Becker told Q2 over the phone Saturday evening.
The motorcycle went off the south side of 6th Avenue North, hitting the curb and a light pole, Becker said. The crash ended near the north end of the Mint Smartwash car wash property at 411 North 7th Street, Becker said.
Police believe the motorcyclist was the only one involved in the crash, Becker said. A passer by initially reported the accident to police.
The man was unconscious when he was transported by ambulance to a Billings hospital, Becker said. The man's injuries were described as "serious" in a tweet from Billings Police Sgt. Ben Milam early Saturday morning.
Becker said the man's blood was drawn at the hospital to look for alcohol or drugs as part of the investigation.
The Billings Police Department Crash Investigation Team worked the scene and considered speed a factor in the crash based on how far debris was scattered at the site, Becker said.
Investigators found numerous skid marks on the pavement, which can be used to calculate how fast the motorcycle was moving, Becker said.
