LAUREL – Firefighters and emergency responders risk their lives every day and put themselves in situations that can compromise their health.

Firefighters, family and friends unveiled the Montana State Firefighters Memorial in Laurel on Saturday.

They honored those who have lost their lives in their duties as firefighters at Memorial Park near the fire station.

The Caledonian Pipes and Drums of Billings played “Amazing Grace” and  helped honor the lost heroes.

The ceremony remembered 74 firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1895.

“The men who died, fathers, sons, brothers, husbands and friends left behind precious relationships and unfulfilled dreams,” said Attorney General Tim Fox, R-Mont. “Their display of extraordinary valor will never be forgotten. And as a state we will continue to honor and commemorate their great sacrifice and that of others who gave their lives fighting fires.”

The dedication ceremony also included a celebration with a street dance and party in Laurel near the fire station.
