Rene Carter, a former Capital High School teacher previously accused of the statutory rape of a student, has entered a plea agreement with Lewis & Clark County.

Carter was initially charged in 2018 with three counts of sexual intercourse without consent. The charges stemmed from accusations of her having a sexual relationship with a student unable to give consent in 2015 while she was a teacher at Capital.

In the plea agreement with the County, Carter has entered an “Alford plea” for an amended charge of felony criminal endangerment. An Alford plea is a guilty plea in criminal court where the defendant does not admit to the criminal act and asserts innocence.

In exchange for the guilty plea, the County dropped the other two charges of sexual intercourse without consent.

Carter received a deferred sentence of three years and will remain on parole during that time.
