BILLINGS - More details were released Wednesday surrounding an attempted abduction in Lockwood and a dangerous high-speed pursuit down Interstate-94 on Tuesday.
Yellowstone County Sheriff Mike Linder said 34-year-old Terry Allen Smith was being held at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility and the woman he allegedly tried to abduct is recovering from injuries.
Smith is held on three possible felony charges of kidnapping, assault on a peace officer, and a parole violation, along with two misdemeanors.
Linder said Smith tried to abduct a woman he did not know in Lockwood. She was able to fight him off and another person stepped in to help. Linder said the woman was injured while escaping Smith.
Once sheriff’s deputies learned of the situation they were able to locate the identified stolen car in Huntley. From there a pursuit ensued down I-94 involving both sheriff’s deputies and Montana Highway Patrol troopers.
The Montana Highway Patrol reported in a social media post that Smith eluded a first set of spike strips and “proceeded to drive eastbound in the westbound lane of I-94 for several miles.” When he slowed down, MHP said a trooper attempted an unsuccessful Precision Intervention Technique (PIT) PIT maneuver.
Smith regained control of the vehicle he was driving and returned to the proper lane for a short time before he drove back into the wrong lane and drove for about 10 miles. MHP said “several attempts were made by multiple agencies, including the Patrol, to spike the tires, and one of these attempts was successful.”
The suspect ran from the disabled vehicle on foot and was apprehended near the Pompey’s Pillar exit on 1-94.
