A statue of Christopher Columbus in San Francisco was vandalized with red paint and a threatening message.

Officials said the statue near Coit Tower was vandalized sometime Sunday. Red paint was poured over the statue and a graffiti message that read "Destroy all monuments of genocide and kill all colonizers" was scrawled on the statue.

Sunday was "Italian Heritage Day" in the city. San Francisco voted a year ago to change the national Columbus Day holiday to Indigenous People's Day.
