Cody, Wyo. – The driver and passenger of a stolen car traded places while fleeing police during a high-speed chase in Cody.

Police said the incident began at about 10:45 p.m. Monday when a Cody police officer saw a white Mazda Miata that matched the description of a car reported stolen in Thermopolis earlier in the day.

According to a press release, the same car had eluded Park County sheriff’s deputies and Wyoming state troopers during a previous highway chase between Cody and Powell. That chase was called off when the fleeing driver began driving into oncoming traffic.

The officer in Cody attempted to stop the car, which then sped up and initiated another chase. During that pursuit, the Cody officer said the driver and passenger switched positions inside the car.

The officer ended the chase when the driver again began driving into oncoming traffic. But a short distance later the officer saw the car drive into an island n the road and become stuck.

As the officer approached the car became free and continued to flee, but this time at a much slower speed. After some distance, the occupants got out of the car and tried to run away.

One man was arrested after a short foot chase. The second man was arrested after officers surrounded the area.
