LOCKWOOD – In February, crews broke ground to launch the construction of a new Lockwood High School, a $49.9 million dollar project.

Construction of the new high school is set to be completed with updated security, a large gym, an auditorium that will seat up to 700 people and spaces for career and tech education.

Construction is on schedule and the superintendent Tobin Novasio says things are on a roll.

I think people are just surprised as to how fast things are going up,” Novasio said. “A lot of the work at first on main construction projects is the dirt work, nobody really notices that. Once that is put in place, things start to pop up real fast. I think that has been really fun for the community to see that and watch that.”

Construction of the performing art center is underway. It is made of pre-cast concrete panels that are 10-feet by 47-feet and weigh nearly 26 tons. A crane is used to move each individual panel.

“While that is going in they are still working on the auxiliary building which is where our high school students will be housed next year and then if you look over here they are actually starting to do the work and the groundwork for the football, soccer and track stadium,” Novasio said.
