BILLINGS – Rae Rae’s Bakery hosted a Depressed Cake Shop fundraiser on Saturday to raise money for the Yellowstone Valley chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Depressed Cake Shop is a nationwide grassroots campaign that bakers can join to help spread awareness for mental health.

“Where there is cake there is hope… and there is always cake,” a sticker promoting the event read.

Saturday afternoon, Rae Rae’s sold special goods that were grey on the outside and rainbow colored on the inside.

The cakes show that a gray cloud can descend over the world when someone is struggling with their mental health.

“I think it’s important for people to know that it doesn’t need to be that way,” said Rae Rae’s co-owner Heather Thompson-Bahm. “There is always somebody there.”

Rae Rae’s Bakery donated 10 percent of its Saturday proceeds to the Yellowstone Valley chapter of the Out of the Darkness Walk.

That walk raises awareness as a part of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Rae Rae’s owners want their bakery to be a beacon of hope for struggling people.

“For us as a bakery, our door is always open,” Thompson-Bahm said. “If you’re ever feeling alone, or you just need somebody to talk to. We are here. We always have a cup of coffee and you are always welcome to come and hang out.”

This year, before the Out of the Darkness Walk on Sept. 15, the Yellowstone Valley chapter is hoping to raise $110,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. If you would like to help them reach that goal, click here.

The folks at Rae Rae’s want to encourage people to participate in the Out of the Darkness walk. They said if you are looking for a team, or are a little hesitant to walk by yourself, the bakery would be happy to have you on board.
