Severe storms that could produce large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain are possible Thursday afternoon and evening.

There is an increased risk of severe thunderstorms across the area starting about mid-afternoon through the evening after a quiet start to the day. Large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning are the main threats.

Monitor for weather alerts, and be aware of changing sky conditions. If severe weather approaches, take safe cover and wait the storm out.

As a cold front approaches the area Thursday, clouds will increase and temperatures will rise to the 80s with 90s likely east of Billings. A cold front will pass through the area, acting as a trigger for the showers and thunderstorms.

Friday and Saturday will be cooler with a good chance of showers and general thunderstorms. Expect breezy winds Friday.

Billings forecast:

Thursday… Partly sunny to start with increasing afternoon clouds. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Some storms could be severe. High of about 84.

Thursday night… Showers and thunderstorms during the evening. Some storms could be severe with damaging wind and hail. Otherwise, mostly cloudy with a low near 56.

Friday… Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Around 70 for the high temperature.
