Johnston, IA (KCCI) — Newly unsealed documents shed new light on a deadly incident at a Johnston day care.
On February 15, a 17-month-old boy reportedly died under the care of Trina Mazza. Authorities charged Mazza with child endangerment in connection with the death.
According to court documents unsealed Tuesday, Mazza called her husband at 12:03 p.m. that day and said something similar to: “Hey, you need to come back. There is a problem with one of the kids. He’s dead.”
Court documents said her husband, Michael Mazza, drove home and found Trina Mazza performing CPR on the child. She reportedly told her husband to dial 911.
According to call logs on Michael Mazza’s cellphone, a call to 911 was made at 12:08 p.m., five minutes after Trina Mazza realized the infant was in serious health trouble.
Medical personnel arrived at the home and found the child unresponsive. He was transported to Blank Children’s Hospital and died two days later.
The Polk County medical examiner said the boy died from accidental choking. Mazza pleaded not guilty to child endangerment.
