Sibanye Stillwater awarded Big Brothers Big Sisters of Yellowstone County a $5,000 grant to support the Laurel school program, the nonprofit announced Friday.
The program is a partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Laurel School District.
The objective of the program is to match high school juniors and seniors with elementary and middle school-aged children.
According to Big Brothers Big Sisters, the mentoring takes place throughout the academic school year with bigs (high school students) visiting their little (elementary or middle school students) twice per week during the school day.
Bigs also attended classes once per week led by Big Brothers Big Sisters that teach them effective mentoring skills, and discuss topics including trauma, mental health, and more.
The goal for the program is to keep kids in school and create relationships that foster improved self-confidence, a higher dedication to school, and an ability to form positive friendships with peers and family members.
