Residents of a port-city in Italy’s Salerno province witnessed a striking spectacle when a huge waterspout tore across the Vietri sul Mare bay on Tuesday.

The whirling, tornado-like column of water eventually moved onto land and damaged trailers and moorings in the city’s port, according to local media.

Resident Antonia Stanzione was enjoying lunch with his fiancee when he saw the waterspout forming and took a video, which he shared with Reuters.

Waterspouts are similar to tornadoes and whirlwinds and are usually the result of rapid cloud formation and upward-moving air currents over a body of water, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.
