BOZEMAN – Meadowlark Elementary Principal Adrian Advincula ate some rare delicacies on Friday after students met a reading goal challenge.

Advincula — also known as Mr. A — promised Meadowlark students he would eat a bug feast if the kids were able to meet their literary goals for the month of February.

The students took him up on the promise, and on Friday Mr. A ate ants, crickets, and scorpions provided by Cowboy Cricket Farm and Montana State University.

Overall, Mr. A said eating the crunchy critters wasn’t too bad and that his students were more concerned than he was.

“Excitement, anxiety, fear,” said Mr. A. “All of those things. There were kids that were nervous for me, they did not want me to eat a bug because they thought it was a punishment. And there were some that were really excited because some have always wanted to try it and some have also had it before so they said it is not going to be a big deal.”

Mr. A said he hoped his example showed kids it is okay to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. He is interested to see what the students will come up with next year.
