The National Trust of Preservation granted the Montana Historical Society $50,000 to produce a short documentary on historic African American experiences in Montana.

The documentary will include oral histories, historical places, and new research. It is part of the historical society’s African American Heritage resources project.

The 16-year-long project will now be featured into a 12-15 minute documentary. This documentary is expected to be complete in August of 2021.

The historical society Community Preservation Coordinator says they already have contracts in place to get this important project of understanding Montana’s past.

“In order for us to understand how we've arrived here in 2020 and how we relate to each other, we have to understand everybody's experiences on moving forward through the past," says Kate Hampton, the Montana Historical Society Community Preservation Coordinator.

The historical society is working on another grant application to hopefully make the documentary almost a half hour long.
