BILLINGS — A group of volunteers traveled from Texas to Bozeman recently to save the lives of three dogs that were at a kill shelter.
"As we help facilitate rescues for animals that are on the kill list and place them either in foster homes, forever homes or in shelters that are really low kill," said Kendra Fike, a volunteer for Montana Animal Transport, which coordinates the trips.
"We really do a lot to take care of our pets and love them, so we just want to bring kind of an awareness," added Fike, who is also Q2's digital director.
According to a no-kill advocacy center, about six million animals enter shelters every year, and approximately two million animals are killed.
The three rescued dogs are now in Bozeman, where volunteer Alana Smith has given them a home until they are adopted.
"It's extremely upsetting to think about how many millions of pets are put to sleep in our country, every year," said Smith. "If you can make a difference and house a few of them I feel like that is all you can really do. And if everybody could do what they can do whether, it's donating to a rescue or that pulls them and finds homes for them or supporting a shelter especially a non-kill shelter, you know you can just do whatever you can do to make a difference."
