LEWISTOWN — Originally built by a group of volunteers nearly 15 years ago and built with 100% donated materials, the Lewistown ice rink continues to be maintained by those who donate their time.
“I see those lights, I know there’s gonna be a lot of fun, it’s gonna be a party," said Chris Marker, the volunteer who originally acquired the Zamboni that still maintains the rink, "It really makes me happy to come here and see the kids and hear them. It’s a joyful sound.”
Residents have been skating together for free since the ice rink opened.
“We get to see some of the youth players who are graduating, getting old enough to play in the adult tournaments, and they’re out there playing with their parents," said Robert Beattie, a youth ice hockey coach who holds practices at the rink.
Lewistown Parks and Recreation said this is an experience that is unique to small towns.
“Small towns just have this uncanny knack of being able to draw people together," said Lisa Langbehn, the Parks and Recreation director of Lewistown..
