City: Diesel spill caused sheen in drainage ditch near Amend Park in Billings

BILLINGS — City officials say they now believe they know the source of a sheen in a drainage ditch near Amend Park in Billings.

Public Works Director David Mumford told Q2 Wednesday afternoon that he believes that diesel fuel either leaked or was dumped onto the ground in a alley north of the park near the intersection of South Plainview Street and Juneau Drive, then washed into the ditch by heavy rains.

The CHS refinery in Laurel shut down a pipeline in the area for testing, but officials there determined that it was not the source of the contamination.

Mumford says about five to six cubic yards of soil was removed from the area and will be replaced with new soil.
