Billings garbage fees to increase across the board

BILLINGS – The Billings City Council voted to increase garbage-collection fees and dumping fees at the Billings landfill Monday night.

Residential and mobile homes located in mobile-home parks will see an increase of 0.54 cents per month on their garbage collection bill.

The fee increase goes into effect July 1.

But collection fees weren’t the big topic of discussion Monday night. Council members spent a lot of time discussing how much out-of-town residents should pay to use the landfill.

Council members added an amendment to increase fees for out-of-town and out-of-state people to dump trash at the Billings landfill.

The resolution originally called for a five percent fee increase, but council members added an amendment to boost that hike to 15 percent.

Because the amended resolution was passed, Yellowstone and surrounding county residents will now pay $9.10 to dump loads up to 1,500 pounds in the landfill, and an out-of-state resident will pay $10.93 for the same amount.

With the resolution, same as before, Billings city residents don’t pay a dime to use the landfill for regular trash. That cost is already built into the garbage collection fee.
