SAN JOSE (Bay Area News Group) — SUNNYVALE – Authorities on Friday arrested a 48-year-old San Jose police officer on narcotics and firearms-related charges.

The arrest stemmed from a traffic enforcement stop in Sunnyvale, according to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety. Officers arrested 47-year-old Daniel Ochoa on suspicion of sales of narcotics and a follow-up investigation identified San Jose police Officer John Tompkins as a second suspect.

Search warrants were served at Tompkins’ home in Sunnyvale on Friday. Police said firearms and narcotics were discovered.

Tompkins was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County jail on two felony charges of possession of narcotics with firearms and two misdemeanor charges of possession of narcotics, according to police.

“I want to thank the SDPS for their work on this case,” said San Jose police Chief Eddie Garcia.

“These allegations are abhorrent and do not reflect the fiber of the San Jose Police Department,” he continued. “I am embarrassed for the amazing men and women who put this uniform on every day and attempt to rid our community of the very crimes this individual is accused of.”

The San Jose Police Department has placed Tompkins on administrative leave and is conducting an internal investigation.
