GRANDVIEW, MO (KSHB) — Cities across Missouri are preparing regulations for medical cannabis dispensaries before the state approves the facilities.
In Grandview, city leaders will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday to review the first draft of a proposal regulating the businesses.
Thursday, leaders in Kansas City will host a second meeting on drafted regulations.
When voters approved Amendment 2 in 2018, it legalized medical cannabis. The state recommends all dispensaries and related facilities be at least 1,000 feet away from churches, schools and daycare facilities. But each city can modify those regulations.
Grandview’s proposal keeps a 1,000 feet buffer for dispensaries around schools, but reduces it to 500 feet around churches and does not place a buffer around daycare centers.
At the first meeting reviewing its proposed regulations, the Kansas City City Plan Commission recommended eliminating the buffer around dispensaries, but keeping it at 750 feet around cultivation or testing facilities.
The Grandview board of aldermen meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. in city hall. The Kansas City Transportation and Infrastructure Committee meets at 8:45 a.m. Thursday on the 26th floor of city hall.
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services will stop accepting applications for medical cannabis dispensaries and cultivation facilities on August 17 and will approve or deny the applications by the end of the year.
