Idris Elba wrote a song inspired by his villainous character in the “Fast & Furious” spin-off “Hobbs & Shaw.”
Elba plays a cyber-enhanced bad guy named Brixton in the flick, a villain who plots against Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s Deckard Shaw to release a virus that will destroy humanity.
He wrote the song on his iPad in between scenes, tinkering with it until he liked it. He then took to Cypress Hill who recorded a final version with Elba. He played the song for director David Leitch, who loved it so much he put it in the movie.
“People know that I DJ and I make music and all that, but the hybrid of being able to put something that I’ve made specifically for a movie I’m in is new territory for me,” Elba told Entertainment Weekly.
Music is nothing new for “The Wire” actor. He often DJ’s under the name DJ Big Driis. Before he became famous, he’d make money taking gigs whenever he could. He performed a set at Coachella in April, and recently signed a global publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group.
“Idris is an artist in so many ways; he’s an incredible actor and also a martial artist and a musician,” Leitch tells EW. “And when you’re surrounded by artists like that, you want to just take advantage of it and support the creativity and see where it goes.”
