Q2 Weather: Billings gets a little relief from the heat and stormy weather

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - It is another beautiful summer day in Billings.

Temperatures are already zooming up into the upper 70s looking for some low 80s this Wednesday.

It seems to be a little bit cooler today thanks to the cold front passage last night. In fact, we are only to the 70s across much of Western Montana and a few 80s in the Northeast.

The thunderstorm outlook today shows only an isolated shower possible in southern Montana.

The Doppler radar and satellite imagery shows most of those showers are already forming in central Wyoming and moving to the northeast corner of that state..

The showers are all part of that monsoonal flow of moisture we get this time of year.

The moisture is streaming up from two areas: the Gulf of California and the Gulf of Mexico.

All these thunderstorms are firing up over the four corner states, then arching their way toward Wyoming and eventually into Minnesota.

At this time, it seems like only the extreme southeast corner the state, Carter County, will catch any showers out of this flow of moisture today.

In fact, our high resolution forecast model shows that even Carter County won’t pick up the showers until 6 a.m. Thursday.

After that, only a few splash and dash showers are expected around the Beartooth, Crazy and the Little Belt mountains.
