First Billings radio station KGHL celebrates 90 years

Posted: Updated:

Ninety years ago the first radio station in Billings went on the air.

KGHL radio ushered in the first wave of broadcasting in the Magic City on June 8, 1928.

The station celebrated that milestone at the Pub Station on Friday night.

Four of the 31 original KGHL advertisers are still in business today.

Company representatives attended from the Northern Hotel, Billings Laundry Company, Great Western Sugar Company and Northstar Auto Body Works.

The anniversary celebration showed the perseverance needed for a successful business.

"Tonight's about thanking the advertisers,” said Taylor Brown, who owns KGHL with his wife Shannon. “On that one plaque, you see the 31 names at the bottom. Those are the advertisers who stuck their neck out and advertised on the radio back when people didn't hardly know what radio was.  A lot of these businesses grew their market share in the dirty 30’s because other businesses that were around in 1928 aren’t here any more."

Charles O. Campbell, who was the vice-president and general manager of Northwestern Auto Supply, founded KGHL.
