New fissure opens as eruptions continue in Hawaii

Posted: Updated:

Another fissure sprung open on Hawaii's Big Island Sunday morning.

More evacuations have been ordered.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense sent out an alert warning of steam and lava spatter caused by the Kilauea volcano.

The fissure is located west of Highway 132 along Hale Kamahina Loop Road.

Originally believed to be the 18th fissure, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory renamed Sunday's fissure number 17 because Saturday’s late evening event never erupted lava.
