Q2 Rewind: Remembering Hart Albin, once the treasured retailer of downtown Billings

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - The Hart-Albin Company was once a treasured anchor in downtown Billings — a department store in a league of its own with a reputation for fine retailing developed over the course of nine decades.

Through the generations, memories of back-to-school shopping and Christmas gift-giving were made at Hart Albin, and it came to be seen as a vital draw for shopping downtown.

So when the company fell on hard times in the late 1980s, it felt like not just the store — but the whole community — was in jeopardy. In fall 1989, the Billings City Council approved a $500,000 loan, secured by the company's real estate, to help save the store. To the dismay of many, it turned out to be too little, too late.

Watch this week's Q2 Rewind to re-visit some of Q2's classic coverage of the Hart Albin company and its dramatic final years.
