Central Elementary School receives SMART Schools Challenge Award

Posted: Apr 27, 2018 5:03 PM Updated:

Governor Steve Bullock visited Central Elementary School today to present them with a SMART (Saving Money And Resources Today) Schools Challenge Award.

The students gave the Governor a tour of the projects they have been working on, including a school yard habitat and recycling initiatives.

Governor Bullock told the students that everyone can learn from their example on how to better protect the environment.

Because of the students’ work, Central School has recycled nearly ten pounds of waste per student.

Upper Elementary Montessori Teacher Tony Napoletano says that the work the students are doing helps future generations.

“It’s not just we’re doing it because it’s the thing to do right now,” says Napoletano, “It’s because we want to have future generations have a healthy planet. “

Now in its fourth year, the SMART Schools Challenge is a friendly competition between Montana schools to see who can save the most money through recycling, conserving energy and implementing green practices.

Thirteen Schools across the state received the award, which includes a $1,000 prize.

According to the state this year schools across Montana diverted 69,881 pounds of waste from landfills and saved $103,503 in energy costs.
