Federal grant to help complete reconstruction of Beartooth Highway in Montana

Posted: Updated:

The final 1.6-mile stretch of Beartooth Highway south of Red Lodge will undergo reconstruction and gain two three-foot shoulders for bicyclists, thank to a $16 million federal transportation grant.

Sen. Jon Tester announced Tuesday the scenic road will get the grant from the U.S Department of Transportation's Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant program.

The construction will complete renovations on the full 67-mile stretch of the Beartooth Highway, which is frequently identified among the most picturesque roads in the country.

“The Beartooth Highway is the most scenic gateway to Yellowstone and draws tourists from around the globe who fuel Montana’s outdoor economy. God doesn’t make places like this anymore and we ought to keep them accessible. Finishing construction ensures folks can continue to visit the picturesque park and enjoy some of the best hiking, biking, and fishing Montana has to offer,” said Tester, a Montana Democrat, in a written statement.

Beartooth Highway connects Red Lodge to Cooke City and Yellowstone National Park.
