Montana Avenue "Magic Project" aims to use lighting to beautify Billings street

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS -- The Billings Depot's largest fundraiser may come with a new push to light up downtown.

A team of lighting specials from California teamed up with Billings Outdoor Lighting to decorate five trees with more than 2,000 feet of lights that will be permanent.

Crews worked in sub-zero temps on Wednesday wrapping each tree to the top.

It's part of a massive-scale neighborhood beautification project, which The Depot has efforted for two years, where each tree on Montana Avenue would be wrapped in lights with wireless speakers added.

The Depot eventually reached out to Bruce Brenon, owner of Shine Illumination, a professional lighting company based in the San Juan Capistrano area of Southern California for help.

"Lighting is an easy way to add life at a fairly inexpensive way to do it without having to change the facade of the building and things like that," said Brenon. He said Billings has elements and beauty that remind him of Kansas City

The goal is to create a "wow factor" for downtown.

"I love to see this revitalization going and this is one more step that we could do," said Grant Fagg, owner of Outdoor Lighting. "If we could get the majority of town to light up the trees, it'd be a unifying thing. It would bring people to Billings and it would bring people to downtown."

Both Brenon and Fagg are donating their time for the project before Saturday's Tast of Billings Gala, which will be raising money to expand the project further.

Brenon is also working with Depot Board Member and area businessman Harvey Singh to light up the front of his restaurant, Seva Kitchen on North Broadway. Brenon is available to consult with other area businesses who would like to work on lighting solutions to make their establishments more attractive year round.
