Montana Ag: Great Falls brewery launches new beer commemorating MSU

Posted: Updated:

GREAT FALLS - The Jeremiah Johnson Brewing Company in Great Falls just released a new beer to help Montana State University celebrate its 125th anniversary.

People will soon see the Golden Bobcat Pale Ale on shelves across the state.

“For about the past six months we’ve been working on a collaboration to produce a beer,” Jeremiah Johnson said. “In making the beer, the key thing was that we wanted to do something really special and really unique. We wanted it to taste like a craft beer but still be a drinkable, easy-drinking beverage.”

The beer features top quality ingredients from around the state.

“We have some of the world’s best barley malt right here in Great Falls, in our backyard. We get it four miles away from our plant, from Malt Europe,” Johnson said. “It really is world class barley malt that we’re getting. All the biggest names in the beer industry and spirits industry, they get that same barley malt from right here in Great Falls.”

One of their most important ingredients is something that really sticks in people’s minds: Smoot Honey.

Johnson said they use the honey from Power in a number of their beers giving them that extra little something special.

“When we can use local products, that’s what we want to do,” he said.

The local brewery scene is gaining more attention across the country and Great Falls is no exception.

“It’s growing fast. I mean you walk into pretty much any bar in Great Falls and what you’ll notice is that those tap handles are more and more leaning towards craft products," Johnson said.

He added that he’s excited to continue working with local companies to bring people a true Montana beer.

The Golden Bobcat Pale Ale will officially launch on Thursday, Feb. 22 at the Front Brewing Company. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with free giveaways.
