Q2 Weather: Freezing rain will be joined by more snow later tonight in Billings

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - It is a wintry mix that is falling in Billings this Thursday afternoon.

However, the stuff that’s really getting our attention is the freezing rain that’s accumulating on the city streets, car windshields and area sidewalks.

The Doppler radar shows the freezing rain as a line of purple, with snow just to the north and east of it, rain mixing with snow is pink to the west and south of Billings and rain beyond that is green.

However in the early afternoon, most of the snow remains jammed up along the Hi-Line and in the northeast corner of Montana.

The computer model shows the snow up there will continue to slowly start making its way to the south and start moving into the Billings area throughout the afternoon.

By 6 p.m. it will be all snow falling in Billings and much of south-central Montana.

That snow should stick around most of the night and give us one more shot of it early Friday morning.

After that the snow will move away but the cold will be moving in on Friday afternoon.

The threat board across Montana is very full with winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories.

Here Billings we can expect to see 3 to 6 inches of snow and icy roadways through 11 p.m. Friday night.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy and colder with a 90 percent chance for snow and snow accumulations around 3 inches. Northeast winds 5 to 15 mph. Wind chill readings will drop down to -10 to -20\ degrees. Low -1 degrees.

Friday: Mostly cloudy with snow showers likely in the morning with accumulations of around an inch expected. Northeast winds 5 to 10 mph, chance of precipitation is 70 percent. High 6 degrees.

Saturday: Mostly sunny and not as cold. West winds 5 to 15 mph. High 19 degrees.
