Small plane registered out of Darby crashes near San Diego

Posted: Updated:

A small plane registered in Darby Montana crashed Tuesday morning killing the two people on board near San Diego, Calif.

MTN News is not releasing the name of the pair killed until authorities officially release their identities.

Officials say the single-engine Cessna took off from Gillespie Field in Santee, Calif., Tuesday morning flying west before making a turn.

It traveled back towards the airport when it may have lost power before it crashed in a dirt lot outside an industrial business area around 7 a.m.

Santee Fire Chief Richard Smith said two dogs were also on the plane. Both were alive and taken to a local veterinarian.

Smith said the plane was leaking fuel on the ground after it crashed and they were waiting on hazmat to clean the fuel.

There is no word on what caused the small plane to crash.

No injuries on the ground have been reported.

This is a developing story.
