Q2 Weather: Quick shot of snow and cold again

Posted: Updated:

Snow whips through the area but the cold is not in as big a hurry to leave.

Temperatures will still be mild in most locations Sunday, reaching highs in the 30s. That is warm enough for rain showers to start with snow to follow.

Temperatures will begin to drop off later Sunday, with snow likely across much of Southern Montana and Northern Wyoming through early Sunday.

Areas south of Billings will likely see higher accumulations of 2-4 inches of new snow. Expect areas of poor driving conditions early Monday. Poor visibility and slick roads will be the big hazards.

Snowfall looks to be confined to a 6 to 12 hour period in any one area.

Temperatures will drop to teens above zero in the mountain foothills communities to the teens and 20s below zero in extreme Eastern Montana early Monday.  Wind chills will be -20 to -40 in these areas.

Highs Monday expected to be single digits above and below zero. Temperatures will be coldest Tuesday morning with subzero readings widespread.

By Tuesday, temperatures are back to the teens and 20s. Wednesday will be warmer, and low 40s are possible by Thursday.

Billings forecast:

Sunday: An 80 percent chance of rain and snow from about noon through early afternoon, then light snow. High near 37. West wind shifts north in the afternoon.

Sunday night: 80 percent chance of light Snow, mainly before midnight. Low around 2. Northerly wind 5 to 15 mph.

M.L.King Day: A slight chance of snow through the morning. Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 11. Wind chill values as low as -10. Light breeze.
