BILLINGS -- To ring in the New Year last year, one Billings family called it a night well before the clock struck midnight, but this year they were awake beyond 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day welcoming their new baby.

Gemma Davey was born at 1:41 a.m. on New Year’s Day to parents Laci and Ian Davey at St. Vincent Hospital.

Gemma was born 13 days early, weighing in at 6 lbs 3 oz.

“I guess she just couldn’t wait to get here,” said Laci Davey

The Daveys’ 13-year-old son, Gabriel, said he’s excited to be a new brother.

The family of four had a late night Sunday, even by New Year’s Eve standards.

Laci Davey had a false alarm around 8 p.m. Sunday, which brought the family to the hospital.

Around midnight, Laci Davey began laboring for about an hour before giving birth to her new daughter.

The start of 2018 is a marked difference from last year, when the Daveys played board games before climbing into bed before the New Year’s ball dropped.

"We were in bed at like 10, we’re not the big partiers or anything,” said Ian Davey.

While most people celebrated the start of 2018 with a kiss and a cheers, the Daveys were totally unaware.

"It didn't really dawn on us until after (the birth). Ian said happy New Year,” said Laci Davey. “It didn't dawn on me because I was the one in pain."

This time next year, the family says they plan to stay awake to celebrate the start of 2019 and Gemma’s first birthday.
