BILLINGS - The owner of the Radisson Hotel in South Billings are looking to demolish their current convention center and build a new, larger space, partially funded with public money.

The new convention center could be  as much as two times larger than the current Montana Convention Center, which is the area’s largest free-standing convention center, said Michael Sanderson of Sanderson Stewart in Billings, which is doing architecture work for property owner Inner Circle.

The owners have met with officials from the South Billings Urban Renewal District, which manages tax-increment financing (TIF) for the area, Sanderson said.

After the talks, there “appears to be support there for some sort of public-private grant,” Sanderson told Q2 News Friday.

Inner Circle, a Florida-based hotel investment firm, has been studying the project for about a year. The company bought the then Holiday Inn Grand at auction on Midland Road, changed the brand and began renovations inside the facility.

The proposed new convention center could be as large as 80,000-square-feet, two stories tall, Sanderson said.

Also looming in the developers’ minds is the proposed One Big Sky Center. The massive downtown development includes a 100,000-square-foot convention center, but the proposal has changed again recently and is not set in concrete.

The developers of One Big have also floated seeking up to $30 million in tax-increment financing from the city for their project. Those funds would come from the downtown TIF district.
