Big Bear owner: Holiday closure a 'big hit' for Billings store

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - It's the time of year when Brett Taylor would normally be restocking shelves and preparing for a mob of customers at Big Bear Sports Center in Billings, but instead, he's focused on rebuilding.

Taylor and his father and co-owner, Bob Taylor, announced yesterday they won't reopen the store for the holiday season because of the damage caused during a Nov. 4 police standoff.

They've been working hard to reopen, but there's too much to do, he told Q2 News in an exclusive interview Thursday at the West End store.

"It is a big hit to us,” said Taylor. “I mean it is our busiest time of the year, as I am sure it is for a lot of businesses…but the biggest thing is we are trying not to focus on that. We are trying to put all of our focus into the future."

Taylor said one of the most difficult things was drying out the store, and working to find out just what had been damaged.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the Taylors thanked the community for their support since a Nov. 4 police standoff inside the store, which caused extensive internal and external damage to the store and left one man dead.

"After analyzing everything from construction of the building to replacing inventory, we will not be able to have everything together and completed in time. We can't express how much we appreciate all of your continued support we are receiving on a daily basis and we will continue to work hard and push forward," the Taylors wrote in the post.

A man, Frank Half Jr., drove a vehicle through the front end of the business early morning Nov. 4, then exchanged fire with police for hours before he was killed. Damages included the front end, bullet holes and water damage from sprinklers.
