BILLINGS - If a store-bought Christmas tree isn't festive enough this year, federal land management officials are offering something different - permits to cut down your own.

The Bureau of Land Management is selling $5 permits at its Lewistown, Butte, Dillon and Missoula offices. The permit includes a limit of three trees per family and a map of approved harvesting areas.

Species vary by location but could include Douglas fir, ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, subalpine fir and spruce.

BLM officials recommend tree cutters dress warm and prepare to walk through snow to find the right tree.

Contact the local BLM field offices for more information: Dillon, 406-683-8000, Missoula, 406-329-3914, Butte 406-533-7600, Lewistown 406-538-1900.
