Q2 Weather: The cold and snow are just next door

BILLINGS -

BILLINGS - It has been another beautiful Tuesday in Billings with mostly sunny skies.

The only problem we see is the temperature; it’s just a little bit cooler.

At 2 p.m. Tuesday afternoon it was 36 degrees with a west wind at 15 mph which gave us a wind chill factor that felt like 27 degrees.

Now we still have a Winter Weather Advisory for the extreme eastern edge of the state until 5 p.m. for 1 to 2 inches of snow and blowing snow.

Plus we still have a High Wind Warning in Wheatland and Sweet Grass counties for dangers crosswinds on Interstate 90 by Big Timber and U.S. Highway 191 in Wheatland County.

There the winds could be blowing to 50 to 60 mph and could pose some problems for high profile vehicles.

Today we’ve had a northwest flow of air that brought some moisture from Saskatchewan and drove across Eastern Montana.

All that moisture is being drawn into a huge upper level Low pressure cell that’s over Ontario, Canada.

High pressure to our West is pushing air into the state, the Ontario Low is pulling it out.

The two are working together to create some very strong gusty winds across the state.

Eventually another surface high pressure cell is forecast to drop in the North Dakota and start pushing some more cold air westward again.

However, the high pressure cells to our West will offset that and keep the coldest air jammed up and Eastern Montana.

We do see a minor shortwave disturbance dropping down from Saskatchewan into southeastern Montana overnight Wednesday and Thursday morning.

This should race through very quickly and drop a little the light snow on the eastern edge of the state.

Eventually by Thursday afternoon mostly sunny skies and high pressure should return and start to warm us up.

BILLINGS FORECAST

Tonight: Partly cloudy, breezy and cool. West winds 15 to 25 mph. Low 28 degrees.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, breezy and still chilly. West winds 15 to 25 mph. High 39 degrees.

Thursday: Partly sunny breezy and just a little but warmer. West winds 10 to 20 mph. High 48 degrees.
