Q2 Weather: A fast moving cold front blows through Montana Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - The chinook winds were making it feel almost like springtime in Billings today.

Temps across much of Eastern Montana continue to warm up nicely, mostly in the 50s.

Throughout much of the morning, all of Eastern Montana enjoyed mostly sunny skies but now a few high clouds are starting to roll in from the Southwest.

Still another storm is moving into the northwest corner of Montana. This one has a little bit of precipitation with the form of rain and snow combined.

In fact, there is a Winter Weather Advisory for 2 to 4 inches of snow with a local amount of 6 inches above the 5,000-foot level around Glacier National Park.

But the main weather maker for Billings today is a surface trough on the eastern slopes of the divide creating some downsloping winds off the mountains.

These downsloping winds are acting like chinook winds and warming up the temperatures and melting all the snow.

A new cold front has moved on shore already in central Washington, Oregon and northern California and is forecast to make its way into Montana around 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

This cold front is already producing snow in the mountains and should race across the state on Tuesday and exit Montana by 6 p.m.

Now this cold front will probably knock us out of the 50s and back down into the 40s.

And because it is so moisture-starved, we are not expecting very much in way of rain or snow with it as it races across the state.

Then, another dry cold front drops down from southern Canada into central Montana before it slides over into the Dakotas.

This front will have very little effect on Billings. It should kiss off us and then send the cooler back up into the northwest corner the state Wednesday evening.

Thursday is a prefrontal warming day it should be warmer and windier than Wednesday with highs possibly mixing into the low 50s over much of southern Montana.

Tonight: Partly cloudy with Southwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Low 34 degrees.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny with a 20 percent chance for snow showers early in the morning, then a slight chance for rain late in the morning. West winds 10 to 20 mph. High 46 degrees.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny and mild. Southwest winds 5 to 15 mph. High 45 degrees.
