LAUREL - Dave Waggoner, a long-time Laurel city employee, is headed to become the city's next mayor.

Waggoner was leading with 53 percent over Laurel City Councilman Tom Nelson with around 1,000 votes left to be tallied Tuesday.

Waggoner received 845 votes to Nelson's 725.

Waggoner will replace Mark Mace, who chose not to seek re-election after one four-year term.

Elsewhere in Laurel, Heidi Sparks clung to an 11-vote lead over incumbent Doug Poehls, 101 votes to 90, for the Ward 1 seat. Evan Bruce also received 85 votes in that race.

In a contested Ward 3 race, Irving H. Wilke led Kathy "Kat" Stokes, 287 to 271 votes.
