Lockwood high school backers to discuss next step at Tuesday board meeting

Posted: Updated:

Lockwood voters approved a proposal authorizing Lockwood school trustees to move forward with a new high school Tuesday night.

The unofficial tally showed the measure taking 69 percent of the vote in the third count. It does not authorize construction of the high school but is a big step forward for supporters.

The proposal was developed after the Legislature approved this a bill this spring, which allowed Lockwood to create its own high school district.

"This is the most excited I've seen the community about this," said Tim Sather, the chair of the school board. "I don't know that I've run in to anybody that said no...and that's across the board - people with kids, people with older kids, and obviously people with their younger kids that will attend this school if its built. So its pretty exciting."

Sather said they will discuss their plan of action going forward at the Tuesday board meeting, but he hopes to have something on the ballot for voters in May.

Sather said while he is happy with the support so far, he knows the difficult part will be passing the funding plans.
