Laurel school bonds fail

Posted: Updated:

Laurel voters are shooting down two bonds worth $52.5 million for major improvements, including building a new elementary school and renovating the high school.

The bond to improve the high school was failing with 41 percent of the vote when election results were released Tuesday night. An elementary school bond also appears to be going down with 43 percent.

District officials had said they needed the bonds to prepare for enrollment increases of about 500 students over the next 20 years.

A $100,000 home would have seen an increase of $125.32 in property taxes to pay for the bonds.
