Bill Cole sails to victory in Billings mayoral race

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - In what was considered a friendly, respectful race for the position of Billings mayor, attorney Bill Cole was elected Tuesday night.

Cole, an attorney and former chairman of the Billings Chamber of Commerce board of directors and former president of the Yellowstone County Planning Board, picked up 16,696 votes, or 63 percent as of 8:20 p.m.

Essmann, a Republican state legislator, owns 9,457 votes, or 36 percent.

Results showed only 37,146 of the more than 41,400 ballots.

Cole told Q2 News Tuesday night that he plans to listen to residents as he takes the city's helm.

"I want them to know their voice will be heard. The way that we can make progress in the city is if we all, or as many as possible, grow in the same direction," Cole said.

"I will be listening to their voice. They need to make their voice heard. We need to come up with this common vision and make some tough choices. But I’m looking forward to the next four years… It’s an exciting time. Billings is on the cusp of becoming a new leader in the New West,” he added.

Essmann congratulated Cole on the victory, "I congratulate Mr. Cole on his impressive victory and wish him and the newly elected Council members the best in their new positions."
