Steve Bannon endorses Rosendale for Montana U.S. Senate race

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - President Trump's former chief strategist is out with his endorsement in the U.S Senate race in Montana.

Steve Bannon's pick is current Montana state Auditor Matt Rosendale, a Republican

Bannon left the White House to return to run the conservative news website Breitbart and has been actively endorsing candidates for Congress.

Breitbart reports Rosendale is conducting "a fiercely independent minded campaign" in his efforts to unseat Democratic Sen. Jon Tester while other Republican hopefuls have so far failed to gain traction.

The pro-Trump organization Great America Alliance is also out with an endorsement of Rosendale. Eric Beach, the group's co-chair, said it's "totally unacceptable" that establishment forces on both sides of the aisle in Washington have been unwilling or unable to advance President Trump's agenda.

Rosendale is one of four Republicans to announce they're running to challenge Tester. Others are Russell Fagg, a former district court judge from Billings, Big Sky businessman Troy Downing, Belgrade businessman Ron Murray and state Sen. Al Olszewski of Kalispell.

Bannon is also expected to endorse a challenger to Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo. The two people being considered include Blackwater founder Erik Prince and Republican donor Foster Friess.

Politico reports President Trump phoned Barrasso and pledged his support.
