Yellowstone records third busiest September despite road closures

Posted: Updated:

Yellowstone National Park had its third busiest September on record this year with 640,068 visits. This total is down 8.79 percent from the 701,754 visits in September 2016, according to a Wednesday park news release.

The 2017 total is also less than the second-busiest September in 2015, which saw 680,213 visits to the park.

Snowy, inclement weather might have contributed to the decline in visits last month, according to National Park officials. Snow, ice, and avalanche danger caused several days of road closures throughout September.

The total number of visits so far in 2017 is approaching 4 million, down 2.47 percent from the same time period in 2016, the busiest on record. Recreational visit totals through September for the past five years are as follows:

  • 2017 - 3,872,776
  • 2016 - 3,970,778
  • 2015 - 3,814,178
  • 2014 - 3,288,803
  • 2013 - 3,111,923
  • 2012 - 3,238,129

Given ongoing high visitation levels, the park's news release emphasized the importance of planning your trip and checking road conditions at the Yellowstone National Park website.
