Q2 Weather: Enjoy the warm sun today for the temps will drop tonight

Posted: Updated:

BILLINGS - Wednesday started off mostly cloudy in Billings, but now it looks like the clouds are starting to give way to clearing skies that are currently over Red Lodge.

In fact, the sun was shining on the ski runs at Red Lodge Mountain.

The cloudy skies that were over Billings continue to track to the Northeast and away from us and heading toward Miles City.

The radar and satellite imagery shows we are getting ready for a major weather pattern change.

The warmer high pressure and sunny skies we had the past few days are now shifting to the east over the high plains and the Great Lakes states.

A new upper-level trough is moving into the Pacific Northwest and is forecast to make its way to Montana.

This new trough will bring cooler and unsettled weather for the end of the week and into the weekend.

At the surface, a new cold front is forecast to move into the Billings area around 10 p.m. and bring with it the chance of rain and snow showers to much of south-central Montana.

The showers moving into the region will be minimal. Billings only has about a 20 percent chance of rain or snow.

And the temperatures are forecast to take a drastic drop. We will get into the 60s in the early afternoon and roll it back down into the 30s by Thursday morning.

Our afternoon highs will stay mostly into the 40s and 50s through the weekend and get back into the 60s around the early part of next week.

Tonight: Turning cloudy and windy with a 20 percent chance for rain showers. Northwest winds 15 to 25 mph in the evening diminishing the 5 to 15 mph overnight. Low 39 degrees.

Thursday: Mostly sunny with a 20 percent chance for rain showers in the morning and cooler. West winds 5 to 15 mph. High 55 degrees.

Friday: Partly sunny, dry and cool. Southwest winds 5 to 10 mph. Look for a 30% chance of rain mixing with snow Friday night. High 53 degrees.
