Ex-boyfriend arrested for murder of Pitt student

Posted: Updated:

A man wanted in connection with the murder of a Pitt student has been arrested.

Matthew Darby, 21, was arrested in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Wednesday.

Myrtle Beach police said a concerned citizen reported seeing a man tampering with a window at a residence. Darby was arrested when officers arrived.

Darby has been charged with providing false information to police and loitering for the incident in South Carolina. A judge in that state denied bond during a hearing Wednesday morning.

The judge said Darby was a potential flight risk due to the outstanding warrant in Pennsylvania for the murder of 20-year-old Alina Sheykhet, who was found bludgeoned to death inside a home in Pittsburgh.

An autopsy determined Sheykhet died from injuries to her head delivered with both a sharp and blunt object.

Sheykhet had taken out a protection order against Darby.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Sheykhet’s family.
